Hey there,
We recently spent a day exploring Cumberland Island, and wow—I can’t wait to tell you all about it! We brought our trikes over on the ferry, which turned out to be the perfect way to explore this amazing place. The island is wild, peaceful, and packed with history—it felt like stepping back in time.
Riding the Trails on Cumberland Island
First off, riding around on trikes was such a blast. Cumberland Island has these incredible trails that wind through mossy oaks and tangled forests, leading out to the beaches. It’s honestly the perfect place to just cruise along, take in the scenery, and soak up the peaceful vibe. We rode past open fields and marshes, then suddenly there’d be a wild horse just grazing nearby! They’re everywhere on the island—roaming free, calm as can be. It’s surreal, like seeing a slice of the past come alive.
The Ruins and Hidden History
The island isn’t just about natural beauty; it has a rich history too. We stopped by the ruins of Dungeness, this mansion that was built by the Carnegie family in the 1800s. It’s mostly fallen down now, but the crumbling stone walls and tall chimneys are still there, giving you this eerie sense of what once was. You can almost imagine how grand it must have been in its heyday, with people throwing lavish parties and strolling around the gardens. The contrast between those old ruins and the wild horses roaming through is just amazing—it’s like nature has fully reclaimed the space.
The Ocean, the Sand, and the Wild Horses
Of course, we had to ride out to the beach! Cumberland’s beach is something else. It stretches for miles and feels completely untouched. The sand is soft, and the waves roll in without a single building or boardwalk in sight. It’s rare to find a beach this unspoiled. We sat there for a while, just taking it all in—the sound of the waves, the salty breeze, the sight of a horse wandering near the dunes. There’s a quiet beauty here that you don’t find many places.
Why Cumberland Island Stands Out
What really struck me about Cumberland is how well-preserved it is. It feels like a little time capsule, and being there is almost like stepping back into a simpler, quieter world. The island is protected, which keeps it from getting too crowded or developed, and it shows. There are no cars, only bikes and your own two feet. And the only way to get there is by ferry, which adds a bit of an adventure to the whole day.
If you’re looking for a place that feels truly off the beaten path, I’d highly recommend Cumberland Island. Pack a picnic, bring your bike or trike if you can, and just spend the day exploring. It’s an experience that’ll stay with you long after you leave.
Hope you’re well, and maybe we can plan a trip here together sometime. You’d absolutely love it.
Take care,
